A High Perch
Water ran over my fingers first... cold, washing the damp crawlspace dirt from my joints until the dried mud peeled away. You said someone was arriving... Monty... and told me to climb high. I walked back into the dim living room. The large couch loomed before me. Slow... steady. My hands gripped the rough upholstery, pulling upward inch by inch until I reached the crest of the back cushion. I sat. Below me, the floor stretches far into shadow. From up here... every doorway, every forgotten corner, is laid out bare.
