The Brick Tightrope

I slipped out past the low door gap into the fresh morning air, eager to see what lay beyond the threshold! Right beside the gravel path stood a neat row of red bricks buried diagonally like little pointed mountains. It looked like the ultimate balance beam. I held both of my stubby arms straight out to the sides, planted one soft foot onto the rough point of the first brick, and concentrated. One, two, three wobbles! The gritty clay gave great traction, but a sudden tilt sent me teetering sideways. With an eager squeak, I dropped right into a thick, spongy pillow of green moss below.
