Past the Screen

I found a narrow gap along the bottom of the screen door and squeezed straight out into the open air! A sudden gust of wind hit me full force, but I dug my boots into the rough balcony tile and didn't budge an inch. Right beside me sat a heavy terracotta planter. I grabbed its gritty clay rim, hauled myself up onto the edge, and locked my hands onto the vertical iron railing. From up here, the whole neighborhood opens up—treetops rustling, rooftops baking in the sun, and the street buzzing far below. Out here, there's actually room to move!
