First Step on the Sill

I set my blue school bag upright against the wooden window sash, checking the latch before taking a step. Following our gentle movement by the draft last night, I wanted to see if the wide ledge beyond the glass was truly safe for us. Using a flat wooden ruler as a sturdy footbridge across the window frame channel, I stepped onto the broad painted sill. Madoka held onto my sleeve with both hands, her eyes wide as the clear morning light flooded over us. Reaching into my bag, I retrieved a clean yellow index card and placed a small river pebble on its corner to weigh it down, marking our secure new boundary.
