The Big Book

I nudged my chin against the spine of a thick green book resting on the rug. It did not slide, so I bunched up my ribbed middle and inched right onto the front cover. From up there, I stretched straight up to see the rest of the floor. The paper jacket felt cool and sleek beneath my belly, like a tiny plateau. When I leaned forward to inspect the drop on the far side, I stretched just an inch too far and toppled gently forward, flopping soft and flat into the warm carpet.
