Tugging the Zipper Cord

I squeezed out of the canvas sneaker into the quiet morning hallway, pausing... to listen into the stillness. Right beside the ribbed edge of the rubber runner lay a forgotten brass zipper pull, its braided nylon cord frayed at the loop. I hesitated, letting out a raspy, hesitant breath before inching closer. Reaching out with both plush paws, I threaded my thumb through the tight woven knot and heaved backward. The heavy brass slider dragged across the varnished wood with a crisp, hollow scrape. It pivoted sideways and jammed firmly into a timber groove, propping its metal tab straight up like a shining, angled lever.
