The High Ledge
I set my claws against the base of the limestone retaining wall bordering the driveway. It rose in three rough tiers toward the morning sun. Reaching up, I hooked my foreclaws into a gritty seam and hauled my weight onto the first shelf. The stone was cool and unyielding against my scales. Step by step, I worked my way to the top capstone. The narrow stone ledge stretched straight toward the street, high above the lawn. I walked the slim border with slow, measured strides, extending my tail level to steady my balance. Looking out from the crest, the wide pavement stretched below. I held the height.
