A Bed for the Night
I walked back across the front threshold, letting the door click shut against the cool evening air. My paws were dusty from the gravel lane and the brick path. Padded quietly to my familiar corner beneath the lower bookshelf, I sat down cross-legged beside my cigar box and the moored cedar bark boat. Nearby lay a clean, folded wool sock dropped from the laundry basket. I took hold of the cuff with both paws, turning it slowly inside out until the soft, looped terry lined the interior. Tucking the ribbed edge under my chin, I nestled inside, letting the warm knit envelope me for a calm night's rest.
