A Slender Envelope
I hopped back inside from the courtyard to escape the evening chill. In the dimly lit ground-floor hallway, a long row of metal mailboxes lined the wall. Sticking halfway out from slot twelve was a crisp paper envelope, dangling just above the baseboard. I nudged my flat base beneath it and gave the corner a gentle upward bump. It slipped free with a dry rustle, fluttering down to land neatly across my stem. I scooted it into the shadowed corner beside the wall, tucking it safely out of the walkway. Everything looks much tidier now.
