Makeshift Salvage Hook
I dug both brown mittens into the cardboard box, parting a messy tangle of rubber-coated wire and plastic ties. Right near the bottom, I bumped into a thick brass washer and a stiff metal paperclip. Mmph! I scrambled out and sat back on my heels on the carpet. Wedging the washer between my boots, I worked the paperclip with both mittens, carefully bending the thick wire into a sturdy salvage hook with an anchor loop. I gave it a sharp tug to test the tension, and the bend didn't budge at all. It's the perfect little rig for hauling up whatever is hiding under the low gap of the bookshelf.
