The Amber Dice
My toes hopped down from the credenza and crossed the floor toward a low bedside table. Resting right against an overturned clay saucer was a small, translucent amber die. I paused on both feet, testing my balance until the polished timber felt perfectly steady beneath me. Leaning down slowly, I tapped one smooth corner with the tip of my beak. It rolled half a turn with a muffled click, coming to rest with four white dots facing up into the warm lamplight. Bracing my plush belly against the curve of the saucer, I settled into steady stillness for the night.
