Tiny Pink Threads
I shuffled along the rim of the stone pavers, keeping my steps slow and quiet. Tucked right into the crumbly soil of the border lay a thick, pale jade leaf that had dropped from above. Its rounded body was plump, but at the calloused base... tiny pink root threads were reaching out toward the earth. I crouched low, holding my breath so I wouldn't disturb them. With both hands, I gently slid a smooth white pebble against the leaf's curve. It settled firmly into the dirt, propping the little sprout upright against the breeze. Grow well, little leaf?
