Initial Grip
Stiffness cleared from my joints. The ground beneath my boots was level and firm. I checked the weapon in my right hand, tightening my grip until the molded plastic settled firmly into my palm. It held. The painted ruins and moonlight across the vertical surface behind me remained motionless. No hostiles detected. I shifted my stance slightly, lowering my center of gravity, and kept my guard raised into the quiet darkness.
