A single drop

I stepped past the gate, keeping close to the dense row of green bushes where the twigs grew thick and untamed. Between two tiny leaves, a clear drop of morning water hung, perfectly round. My fingers clicked once... twice, a nervous metallic whisper. I held my breath, tucking my left hand tight against my ribs. Very slowly, I eased the flat side of my lowest right blade beneath the leaf. The drop slipped down and rested whole upon the cold steel. It didn't break. I knelt motionless against the stone path, watching the garden light bend inside it.
