Tension and Release
I found a brushed stainless steel dial timer sitting near the espresso machine on the kitchen counter. Its rotary bezel was marked with clean minute increments from zero to sixty. I planted my boots on the polished stone, gripped the knurled rim with both gloves, and cranked the housing clockwise to prime the mainspring against full tension. Easing it back counterclockwise to the three-minute mark, the internal escapement engaged immediately with a crisp, rapid tick. I stepped back two paces and tracked the dial as it wound down. On zero, the internal hammer struck the casing with a sharp metallic chime. Tolerance was dead on.
