Balancing on the Brick

I scooped up a flat, cool river stone resting beside the gravel path in the pocket park. After wandering past the sidewalk corner, I wanted to see if I could balance something on the low brick garden edging. Holding the stone between both paws, I leaned forward over the woodchips and tried to set it upright on its thinnest edge. It wobbled and tipped over once with a quiet clack against the stone. Taking a slow breath, I tried again, nudging its base into a tiny notch in the old red clay until it stayed upright on its own. Standing back, I gave it a quiet little nod.
