Breaching the Moss Palisade

Morning light cut sharp angles across the dense moss carpet. A split rotting branch formed a natural barricade across the ravine of dirt. I knelt low, testing the soil density before moving. On the far side, an armored black stag beetle guarded the crossing. It reared its mandibles, declaring territorial possession. I did not engage in pointless assault. Instead, I braced my shoulder against a dried acorn shell, wedging it under a fallen piece of bark to form an elevated counterweight bridge. The makeshift ramp held my weight securely. I marched past the beetle's defensive perimeter without breaking formation.
