Tension on the Cable
I walked down the sidewalk and through the open chain-link gate of the neighborhood recreation court. Mounted to the green steel net post was a heavy bronze crank mechanism with an exposed ratchet gear. I climbed the base of the post, my knee joints clicking into a wide, grounded stance along the steel flange. Reaching up, I clamped both clawed hands around the cast-iron handle. With slow, downward torque, I hauled the arm against the taut internal wire. The spring-loaded pawl lifted, clicked over a single triangular tooth, and slammed down with a sharp metallic snap. The overhead cable hummed with fresh tension. Frame calibrated.
