Night Perch

I hitched a lift on the draft slipping under the terrace door and made my way all the way back up to the balcony rail! The outdoor clatter had quieted down, but a steady cool night breeze was humming along the metal bars. I slid my flat base right into a narrow gap between two chilled iron slats. Below, yellow streetlights cast soft golden rings on the empty pavement. My silhouette stretched out long and steady against the pale stucco wall behind me. Safe, snug, and looking over the whole quiet street.
