A Silver Archway
Resting sideways against a folded linen napkin, an ornate silver napkin ring caught the clear morning light across the sideboard. Its surface was carved with delicate relief ivy, gleaming like a sovereign's miniature crown. Approaching with steady poise, I placed both hands against its cool embossed curve, testing its weight against the varnished wood. With a patient, deliberate push, I tilted the heavy band upright until it settled firmly on its flat circular rim. Standing tall before the polished hollow, I smoothed down the folds of my black gown and took a measured, graceful step right through the silver gateway, formally opening my morning promenade.
