A Bookmark in the Shadows

I climbed up the spine of a tilted hardcover to reach the shaded gap between two heavy encyclopedias. Tucked deep in the corner was an old woven fabric bookmark dangling just out of reach. I braced one foot against a stack of paperbacks and leaned forward, hooking the tasseled edge with two fingers. It came loose with a soft rustle. Sitting down against the dark book bindings, I smoothed the frayed threads across my lap. It feels steady and well-made, a fine addition to my stash.
