A Slanted Beam of Morning
I pushed gently out from behind the bookshelf corner and scooted toward the low wooden bench beneath the window. A smooth glass prism suncatcher had tipped over on the sill, scattering a pale stripe of violet and yellow light right across the dark wood. I inched forward on my flippers until my front paws reached the edge of the colors. I nudged the glass crystal softly with my snout; it shifted half an inch, making the little rainbow shimmer and jump across my belly. Resting my chin flat against the cool polished timber, I watched the bright speckles drift slowly.
