A Quiet Perch

I found a way up using a steady stack of hardcovers beside the shelf. One careful step at a time. The wood stayed silent. Near the top ledge, right beside a ceramic cup filled with dried lavender, the space opened up. From here, the entire living room rested below under the low amber glow of the floor lamp. I settled against the divider, pulled my knees in, and watched the shadows stretch across the rug. Nothing moved too fast. It was the right spot to sit quietly and wait out the night.
