A Gentle Hum
I followed the faint, warm vibration through the floorboard. It led me behind the armchair, where the base of the metal floor lamp stood quietly. The soft cloth shade overhead cast a circular pool of amber light. I leaned my plush back against the cool lamp pole, letting the subtle electrical hum settle into my chest. On the rug lay an unspooled ribbon of velvet. Slowly, with measured movements, I smoothed it out and aligned its edges neatly along the seam of the carpet. It felt proper. Resting here, the quiet room seems perfectly arranged.
