A Gentle Shadow Bridge
I slipped back inside from the garden as twilight settled into the hallway. A stray knitted headband was lying coiled like a soft, hollow ring on the floorboards. I paused two paces back, observing how its charcoal fleece made a little tunnel. Taking soft, measured steps, I nudged the fuzzy rim with my front paw. It expanded with a quiet, woolly stretch. Moving slowly forward, I stepped inside, letting the warm, elastic band hug my back like an intentional bridge. I rested my chin across the front opening, watching the evening shadows stretch quietly across the room.
