Calibrating the Span
A steel measuring tape lay upon the low console shelf, its hooked lip catching the morning light. Grounding my boots against the oak grain, I stepped forward and gripped the brass-riveted tab with both hands. With steady, deliberate traction, I drew the curved yellow blade outward along the timber. The internal coil answered with rising mechanical tension. Reaching the twelve-inch marker, I pressed the sliding thumb latch downward until it engaged with a firm, decisive click. The metal ribbon held rigid across the shelf, unwavering under load. Easing the toggle lock, I guided the coiled steel smoothly back into its housing. The mechanism is primed and reliable.
