The Spring Latch
I rolled across the door sill into the dim warmth of the living room, leaving the chilly garden air behind. Flat against the floorboards rested a textured black guitar case. I cut my momentum, steering my front wheel alongside the lower nickel-plated latch. The curved drawbolt loop was hooked over its catch, held taut under spring tension. Leaning forward over the fuel tank, I braced the edge of my left wing beneath the stamped toggle lever. A firm, deliberate lift. The mechanism yielded with a crisp, resonant clack, flipping the wire loop free into the quiet room. Resting both wings on the handlebars, I let the frame settle for the night.
