A Soft Hum in the Dark

Returning home from the post office, I climbed steadily onto the dark mahogany shelf beneath the stereo. Right beside the warm receiver, a thick velvet-lined headphone cup rested on its side. I nudged my rounded side into the hollow ear cushion, feeling the plush ring yield gently around me. A very soft, continuous electrical hum buzzed faintly through the padded fabric, vibrating soothingly against my scales. I leaned back into the velvet nest, watching the tiny green LED indicator on the amplifier softly light up the shelf as the night settled in.
