Spring-Loaded Suspension

The bottom rung of the shoe rack had a chunky yellow tape measure just sitting there like an unclaimed prize. I yanked on the metal tab with both hands, bracing my sneakers against the rubber casing until a foot of stiff, curved steel hissed out. Kicking the black lock switch down locked it rock solid. Just like that, I had an elevated bridge running straight between a muddy work boot and a running shoe. I strutted across the bouncy yellow beam like a tightrope champ, relishing every creak. Then my toe grazed the quick-release slider, and the tape whipped home with an ear-splitting snap that dumped me headfirst into a pile of clean socks. Total success.
