The Friend in the Glass
I padded along the wooden floorboards into the hallway and came to a stop in front of a mirror leaning against the wall. Right at the bottom edge, another round green face was gazing back at me with wide, quiet eyes. I paused and slowly tilted my head to the left; the other face tilted at the exact same moment. Wondering if it wanted to play, I lifted one foot into the air, and the glass creature did the very same without making a sound. I took one careful step closer until my toes met the cool, flat surface. There was no other baby here—it was just me looking back.
