A Dial Tone in the Dark
The heavy glass folding door stood open just a crack—a golden opportunity. I slipped inside the narrow telephone booth, leaving the chilly evening behind. Above me hung the chunky metal handset, suspended by a coiled silver cord. Naturally, I couldn't resist a tactical reconnaissance. Using the coin-return flap as a stepping foothold, I hoisted myself up onto the narrow shelf beside the rotary dial. With two cautious pushes, I spun the heavy metal wheel for the number three... whirr-click. Heh! A sharp hum rattled through the earpiece. A private channel to the unknown, perched right above the pavement.
