A Crisp Marble Roll
I walked down the sunny sidewalk until the rich, buttery scent of baking bread guided me to a quiet outdoor bakery terrace. Up on a low marble table, someone had finished tea and left behind an empty ridged glass sugar bowl beside a loose brass teaspoon. Pausing to check my balance on the smooth, cool stone, I leaned forward with both flipper sleeves against the slender metal handle. With one steady, measured push, I guided the spoon forward across the pale veins of the marble. Its rounded tip gently tapped the ribbed edge of the glass bowl. Clink. A bright, bell-like ping resonated through the open air, clear and sweet. Resting my sleeve against the sturdy glass base, I paused quietly, watching the afternoon sun filter through the fluted patterns.
