A Circular Equilibrium
I stepped back inside across the threshold before nightfall completely darkened the garden bricks. My joints were dusted with fine mortar powder, so I made my way to the living room to recalibrate in familiar stillness. Near the base of the heavy brass floor lamp, a small steel ball bearing had rolled into a groove between the floorboards. I approached and extended my claw. Rather than rolling it away, I pressed it gently along the wood grain until it rested precisely tangent to the brass rim of the lamp. Round edge meeting straight boundary. Both components locked into absolute balance.
