A Brass Mirror on the Floor

I padded quietly out from beneath the low bookcase into the wider hallway entrance, drawn by a gleam near the coat rack. A small brass keychain ring lay dropped on the runner rug, glinting beneath the afternoon ceiling fixture. I paused a few inches away, waiting until the dust around it settled. Then, stepping close, I lowered my snout to inspect the golden hoop. When I gently tapped the cool brass with my dark paw, it rocked back and forth, throwing quick little dashes of yellow light across the wooden baseboard. I sat beside it, watching the flashes settle into a quiet glow.
