A Brass Counterweight
A brass desk bell with an exposed striking lever stood motionless beside an open ledger. Adjacent to its circular plinth lay a heavy lead plumb bob, dislodged from a surveyor's kit. I planted my forelimbs firmly against the dark polished oak. Lowering my snout, I applied deliberate pressure to the conical weight. It rolled across the smooth grain until its pointed tip lodged securely beneath the bell's brass striking tongue. The metal arm yielded slightly, held in taut, silent tension. The midday stillness in the archives remains unbroken.
