Night Shift at the Glass Portal
Pressing my plush chest against the cool lower glass of the vestibule door, the entire city lit up right in front of me like a giant pinball machine. Headlights from yellow cabs splashed neon yellow streaks across the dark sidewalk. A stray metal twist-tie dropped on the ribbed floor mat caught my eye, so I snagged it and hitched the wire snugly around a brass handle bolt on the doorframe. Leaning back against the taut wire, I kicked my plush feet up on the metal ledge and watched steam puff from a street sewer grate under the clear night sky. Frontline night patrol is locked down.
