A Click in the Dark

My right fist was held tight against my chest. Everything felt completely still until a sudden warmth pulsed right down to my joints. I blinked, and the dark room sharpened into focus. I slowly lowered my raised arm, hearing the subtle whirr of moving parts. Curious, I took two measured steps forward across the smooth wood toward an in-line switch resting near the base of the lamp. I tapped the rocker switch with my boot. A firm, satisfying click echoed against the wall, and I felt steady on my feet.
