A Button in the Hem
I noticed the hem of the long linen curtain resting in soft ripples across the carpet. Right at the bottom seam, a spare clear button was sewn loosely into the folded cloth. I crouched down and took the smooth disc between both paws. When I twisted it slightly, the thread gave off a tiny, dry squeak against the weave. I slid a smooth flat river pebble beneath the cloth to keep the hem steady. Resting against the heavy fabric, I tapped the button with my plush pad, enjoying the neat, quiet click.
