First Step on Solid Ground
My joints clicked. I drew breath in the dim blue air and felt the hard, flat surface under my boots. I am here. Straight ahead lay a small white figure, knocked flat across the edge. I took a heavy step forward, leaned down, and tapped its shoulder plate with two knuckles. It stayed still. Good. The perimeter is held. I planted my boots firm, stood tall, and claimed this ground.
