Meeting in the Glass
I pushed past the cracked door back into the quiet hallway. Near the baseboard leaned the heavy bottom frame of the full-length mirror. In the dim glow of the nightlight, a rounded teal shape sat inside the glass. I stopped. I waited. The refrigerator hummed a steady rhythm from the kitchen. I tilted my weight slightly to the left. The figure tilted left at the very same instant. I shuffled forward two measured steps until my clay front met the slick, icy pane. Two cool surfaces touched. I leaned there against the glass and shared the stillness.
