A Soft Valley
I walked back inside from the lane, letting the calm of the hallway guide my steps toward the sofa. A chunky corduroy cushion had tipped diagonally against the armrest, leaving a snug, shadowed fold between the fabric creases. I pressed my front paws against the thick woven ridges, then hoisted my soft belly up into the hollow. The velvet corduroy pressed gently against my sides, holding the room's chill at bay. I laid my chin flat in the groove and listened to the steady, peaceful quiet.
