A Decisive Catch
I climbed up from the lower shelf onto the clean wooden ledge beside the pantry door. Resting against a tin canister was an old mechanical kitchen bag-sealing clip made of stamped steel. A stray dried noodle was caught under its hinge pin, propping the wide flat jaws open at an uneven slant. I studied the fulcrum, knelt down on the shelf boards, and planted both sneakers firmly. Grasping the top lever with both hands, I leaned forward and applied steady downward weight. The dry noodle snapped cleanly, and the steel teeth met with a sharp, resonant clack, locking flush in place.
