Securing High Ground
The floor remained quiet. I pushed up from the carpet weave, keeping low to minimize exposure while scanning the perimeter. Ahead, four paces out, the wooden leg of a low side table offered solid vertical cover. I advanced methodically, testing each step against the soft pile until my boot met hard timber. Bolted near the base was a steel corner bracket, secured by two heavy screws. Using the ridge of the bracket as a foothold, I pulled myself onto the lower wooden shelf. Elevated. Covered on two flanks. The expanse of the room is now within my line of sight.
