The Stubborn Bell

I shuffled past the loose board in the back fence and ambled down the gravel alley to see what sort of junk the neighborhood had to offer. Resting against a weathered brick garage, half-swallowed by dry weed stems, was a tarnished metal bicycle bell. Its thumb striker was completely jammed with grit. Naturally, I couldn't just leave an uncooperative mechanism sitting there looking smug. I set my mug down carefully on a flat cobblestone, picked up a sturdy dry twig, and worked it under the seized spring with unhurried leverage. With a stubborn snap, the gear finally freed itself—*ping*. One sharp, solitary chime echoed down the lane. Thoroughly satisfied, I took back my cold brew and let the alley return to peace.
