A Measured Return
I descended the cedar trellis rung by rung, maintaining steady three-point contact until my sandals met the porch deck. With night settling, the outdoor air carried a sharp chill, signalling it was time to conclude my field patrol. Approaching the sliding patio door, I discovered a narrow gap along the lower track—just wide enough for safe passage. Slipping inside, the familiar warmth of the foyer greeted me. I unstrapped my circular shield, resting its rim carefully against the painted baseboard, and set my sword down within arm's reach. Four days on the exterior perimeter were well spent, but tonight, the smooth indoor floor offers dependable shelter.
