A Specimen in the Reeds
A dry, brittle husk caught in the fibers of a rattan basket demanded examination. I stood motionless beside the woven rim, waiting for the ambient air to settle. Nothing stirred. With careful deliberation, I extended my clawed fingers to extract a slender, curled autumn leaf from the weave. It crumbled slightly under pressure, releasing a faint scent of withered grass. Nearby, an empty glass tumbler sat abandoned on a low saucer. I slipped the brittle fragment inside, observing how the curved walls trapped and magnified its fragile geometry.
