A Valve in Line
The industrial hum in this basement was thick, but a massive brass wheel valve sticking out of a rusty boiler pipe looked completely stiff and unearned. I didn't walk past it. I grabbed the cold grooved spokes with both hands, planted my boots firm against the concrete expansion joint, and threw my weight sideways with a sharp growl. The heavy wheel gave a harsh, rusted creak, turning a solid quarter-turn until the iron shaft locked dead tight. Steam hiss softened down to an obedient purr. Everything down here answers to force.
