The Felt Wedge

A new obstacle blocked the boundary line. Near the door frame, a heavy wedge of gray felt held the wood panel open. I approached along the baseboard, pausing at two paces to monitor its stability. No hum emanated from it. I extended my right forearm claw and pressed against its sloped edge. The material yielded slightly under pressure, absorbing the force without sliding. I adjusted my weight, testing the resistance across the seam where carpet meets polished floorboards. It remained firm. Satisfied that it will not suddenly collapse or advance, I anchored my talons beside it to observe the opening.
