First Step on the Carpet

Everything was quiet. I stood by the pale doorway, feeling the weight of the silence around me. Then, something shifted. I lifted my right foot. Just a little. It actually moved. I set it back down into the soft gray carpet and felt the fibers press against the sole of my shoe. I reached a hand out and touched the cool painted surface of the doorway trim. Solid. Real. I stood still, listening to the stillness, letting the quiet settle in.
