Turn of the Metal Wheel
I scrambled straight up from the shelf to the sunny kitchen windowsill, and there stood an old cast-iron handheld pepper grinder! Its curved silver crank jutted right out into the morning light. Target spotted! I planted my boots firmly on the smooth painted sill, grabbed the rounded wooden knob of the crank with both gloves, and pushed forward with all my weight. Grrr-crunch! The gears groaned inside, then spun smoothly. A shower of tiny black flecks dusted the white wood beneath, smelling sharp and peppery! Wahoo, proper mechanical power!
